Funboard surfboards are the among the most popular surfboards offered for sale. Funboard surfboards have more stability and more bouyancy which make them ideal for the beginning surfer.
The egg funboard surfboard has a rounded full nose and a square tail. It is called an egg funboard surfboard because of its rounded shape and short length. A funboard surfboard has the floatation and stability of a longboard, coupled with the fin system and performance of a shortboard.
A hybrid funboard surfboard’s nose is more pointed than the egg surfboard with a hard rail and round tail. It is great for beginners as well as more advanced surfers.
The funboard surfboard is a combination of the features of both shortboards and longboards. They are generally midsized, usually 7 to 8 feet in length and designed to allow waves to be caught more easily than a shortboard more be maneuverable than a longboard.
Longboards are the first and original board used in standup surfing. Lonboards vary in length from 9 foot up to 14 foot with longboards up to 30 foot long used by ancient Hawaiians.
Some of the other longboards are:
Tri-fin (also known as Thruster) longboard which has three fins under the tail.
Longboard gun. Teardrop shaped, 9-12 foot long.
2+1 longboard combining features of the classic longboard and the Tri-fin.
Mini tanker is basically a shortened longboard normally ridden by women and children.
The Malibu. What most surfers started on.
Olo. Originally reserved for royalty due to its size (up to 24′)and weight (up to 200#).
Modern surfboards may contain multiple contours on the bottom of the board which may be either concave or convex. They have fins on the bottom, either single or multiple which act as a rudder and keep the surfboard from sliding sideways. A leash connects the surfer to the surfboard to prevent it from being lost.
How easy the surfboard is to control and how it responds is determined by the surface area, shape of tail and placement of the fins.
